CREATIVE PEOPLE | COURTENAY MCCUE

Posted on December 30, 2015

I feel so lucky to have the majority of my family close by on the Gold Coast and it is even cooler to watch them all grow and develop their creative passions and skills. My beautiful cousin Courtenay has finished her first year out of school and wow did she take the world by storm. Courtenay has developed her unique artistic style and wasn't afraid to see where it can take her. So let me introduce her..

When did you discover your passion for art?

I have always seen art in everything from a young age, but I truly discovered that its the career path I want to take at the end of year 12. I had my year 12 major art piece due within a week, and I still had no idea what I was going to do. So I decided to do a piece with a theme that truly inspired me from a young age, which was cartoons and super heroes. I chose my 4 favourite heroes/villains (Batman, Robin, The Joker and Wonder Woman) and got to work. Within a weeks time I had created one of my favourite artworks to this day.

Your work is so unique, how would you describe your style?
My style is a nuance look on traditional thinking with my themes within my pieces. I am probably most known for my mermaid designs also, I have some traditional appearing mermaids but many of them have hooks for hands & one eyes and many other uncharacteristic features that make them stand out and create interest.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I have used my surroundings to gradually influence my style. My artistic style is taking a concept people are familiar with and completely flipping it and giving it a new perspective. For example my Bert & Ernie re-imagined as strippers, I try to create something that gets more than a second glance.
You have done some huge pieces, how long do they usually take to create?

Surprisingly, I find it easier and more enjoyable doing large scale pieces. The thing that consumes the most time is waiting for each layer to dry. I can complete a big canvas within 2-3 days.

So what does the future hold for the talented young CRT Designs?
I plan on focusing on art full time next year with the eventual goal to take my art international!
